Foto centro storicoThe city of Parma has been a capital, although small, for centuries. This is still very evident in the fine look of the city itself, and in the quality of life of its inhabitants.

In Parma one finds exhibitions and museums that are well-known and appreciated even abroad, theatre and opera programmes of very high level, an internationally-oriented university. All this makes the city a very exciting and appealing place to visit.

Located at the threshold between the Po Valley and the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Lombardia and Emilia-Romagna regions, the province of Parma is a dynamic and productive area, deservedly called “Food Valley”.

Agriculture, craftsmanship, tourism, spa and services are the main economic activities of the area.

In the province area, an astonishing economic development has taken place in the last ten years, thanks to an industrious and dense network of small enterprises that make great use of advanced technology and to the well-established food sector.

In Parma, people work hard to achieve high-quality food products that are greatly appreciated all over the world, like the “Prosciutto di Parma”, Parmesan cheese, pasta, milk, tomato sauces, as well as the technologies adopted to ensure their quality.

Parma and its province are of generous, lively, hospitable and musical nature. It is a land of sentiment and passion as expressed in Giuseppe Verdi’s melodramas, described by the writers Giovannino Guareschi and Alberto Bevilacqua, or portrayed in Bernardo Bertolucci’s movies.

Italian novelist Guido Piovene in his book "Journey to Italy" (1957) saw Parma as a sort of “little Paris” of the Po Valley, as its elegant, tolerant and cultured capital. According to him, people in Parma love good food, just like people from the Emilia region in general, but eat more elegantly. In Parma, he wrote, eating is linked to culture, it is considered as part of one’s erudition.
